ARPU meaning
Average revenue per user: total revenue divided by active users over a period, a pulse check on pricing and expansion.
What is ARPU?
ARPU is revenue spread across the user base: take the month's revenue, divide by active users, and you get the average each user contributes. For a $9,600 month across 800 active users, ARPU is $12. It is a blunt but useful average, and its value is in movement: ARPU rising while usage holds means pricing, upgrades or expansion revenue are working; ARPU falling while you add users means new cohorts arrive on cheaper plans or discounts.
Why it matters to an indie builder: ARPU is the connective tissue between pricing decisions and growth math. Multiply it by users and you have revenue; divide your CLV assumptions by it and you have tenure in months; watch it after every pricing change and the noise around launches settles into a signal. It also disciplines freemium: a free tier dilutes ARPU by design, so the number tells you whether the free funnel converts enough to pay for itself.
A concrete example: a tool at $15 per seat, flat. ARPU holds at $15 for a year. The team adds a $39 Pro tier with the two features power users kept requesting. Three months later ARPU reads $18.40: 22 percent of users upgraded, and expansion revenue, not new signups, produced the entire increase. Same headcount, 23 percent more revenue, and the decision to build Pro rather than acquire users is vindicated by one line of arithmetic.
Common mistakes: computing ARPU over registered users instead of active ones, which shrinks the number every time an old account goes quiet and tells you nothing about the business, comparing ARPU across business models as if it were a grade, consumer apps at $2 and B2B tools at $40 are different sports, celebrating ARPU rises that come from taxing a shrinking base, always read it next to user count and churn, and ignoring account-versus-seat counting, which makes month-over-month comparisons drift. The analytics and billing blocks on IndieBoot report ARPU out of the box.
How is ARPU calculated?
ARPU = Total Revenue / Number of Users
