ARR meaning

Annual recurring revenue: the yearly run-rate of active subscriptions, the standard scale metric of SaaS valuation.

What is ARR?

ARR is MRR annualized: multiply monthly recurring revenue by twelve, or sum annual contracts at face value. 780 dollars of MRR is an ARR of $9,360. It is the metric the outside world prices SaaS with, valuation multiples apply to ARR, investors and acquirers speak in ARR bands, and crossing ARR thresholds, $10K, $100K, $1M, marks the stages of a company's life more meaningfully than headcount or age.

Why it matters to an indie builder: even bootstrapped, you live in the ARR economy. The number sets what your business could sell for, small software products routinely trade at 3 to 5 times ARR, determines whether running the business beats employment arithmetic, and forces the annual-view discipline that monthly dashboards hide: a $700 MRR dip is a bad month; the same dip annualized is $8,400 of ARR gone, which is how a buyer or your future self will read it.

A concrete example: a solo product at $4,300 MRR reports ARR of $51,600. A churn spike hits in March, MRR drops to $3,900, and the monthly chart reads as a dip. The ARR lens says the business just lost $4,800 of sale value at a 4x multiple, reframing the incident from bad month to capital event, and the response changes accordingly: a retention project gets scheduled with the priority of recovering a five-figure asset rather than the priority of appeasing a dashboard. Same data, different altitude, different decision.

Common mistakes: multiplying a seasonal peak month by twelve (annualize a representative baseline, or better, trailing twelve months), counting one-time setup, services or usage overage as recurring, inflating ARR before cash confirms, trials and annual-prepay discounts adjusted out or the number drifts from reality, and celebrating ARR growth while net revenue retention sits under 100 percent, growth by acquisition masking a shrinking base. See mrr for the monthly view and churn for the leak; the billing blocks on IndieBoot compute both.

How is ARR calculated?

ARR is typically calculated by taking the monthly recurring revenue (MRR) and multiplying it by 12. For instance, if a company's MRR is $10,000, its ARR would be $10,000 x 12, or $120,000.
