Fast, Unopinionated, Minimalist Web Framework for Node.js
The most popular Node.js web framework. Minimal and flexible, with the core features web and mobile applications need.
Express is the minimal Node.js web framework: routing, middleware, request and response primitives, and forty-some minor versions of stability. It powers a vast share of the API surface of the JavaScript ecosystem, usually from inside larger stacks.
Why founders use it: minimalism composes. A REST API in Express is a file of routes and middleware, legible to any Node developer alive, and the middleware pattern, a chain of functions handling the request, scales from logging and parsing to auth and rate limiting without changing shape. When the framework stays small, the architecture stays yours: layer it into modules, add a router per domain, keep it boring.
A realistic setup: an Express app with a middleware chain, CORS and body parsing, an auth layer issuing JWTs, routes calling service modules over the database, and the whole thing behind a process manager or a PaaS. Testing hits the app with supertest in CI.
Trade-offs: minimal means unwired, no validation, ORM or conventions out of the box, and callback-era patterns persist in older tutorials. Fastify offers the same shape with better defaults and speed. Compare with the full-stack frameworks when the frontend and backend belong together.
Who it's for
Node.js developers who want the minimal, ubiquitous choice for APIs and server-rendered apps.
