TTV meaning
Time to value: how long a new user needs before the product delivers the payoff they signed up for.
What is TTV?
TTV clocks the distance between signup and the moment the product proves itself: the first invoice generated, the first bug caught, the first report that saves an hour. It is the activation metric reframed as time, and time is the honest unit, because a user who reaches value in three minutes and one who reach it in three days are, behaviorally, different users: the second probably never arrives. Every onboarding friction tax, empty state, config wizard, integration step, is paid out of TTV.
Why it matters to an indie builder: TTV is where trial conversions are won, and trials are where indie products live or die. A 14-day trial with a two-day TTV gives the user twelve days of experienced value before the paywall; the same trial with a six-day TTV is really a seven-day trial with a discouraging first week. Shortening TTV is usually the highest-ROI retention work available, and it almost never looks like new features, it looks like defaults, templates and doing the first task for the user.
A concrete example: an analytics tool whose onboarding asks for a data source, an API key, three dashboard settings and a naming convention before anything renders: median first-insight time, four days, trial conversion 4 percent. The redesign ships a demo dataset preloaded, insights visible in 90 seconds, and defers every configuration until after the user has seen the product work. Median TTV drops to under 10 minutes, trial conversion reaches 11 percent, and support tickets about setup, previously the top category, fall by two thirds. No feature was added; the value was merely moved to the front.
Common mistakes: defining TTV as account setup rather than payoff (connected a data source is not value, the answer it produced is), demanding configuration before demonstration (users tolerate setup after the aha moment that they resent before it), measuring the median and ignoring the distribution, a bimodal TTV means two onboarding paths and one of them is broken, and improving onboarding endlessly while signup promises mislead, TTV begins on the landing page, where expectations are set that the first session must keep. See mvp and dau for the adjacent disciplines.
How is TTV calculated?
TTV is calculated as the duration between the moment a customer purchases or starts using the product and the point at which they achieve a meaningful outcome or key milestone.
Example:
- A customer purchases a SaaS platform on January 1 and completes the first automated workflow (their desired outcome) on January 15. In this case, the TTV is 14 days. TTV can be improved by simplifying onboarding, offering educational resources, and providing proactive customer support.
