MRR meaning
Monthly recurring revenue: the normalized monthly value of all active subscriptions, the headline number of a SaaS.
What is MRR?
MRR is the subscription business distilled to one figure: every active recurring plan converted to its monthly equivalent and summed. Annual plans divide by twelve, a $1,200 year becomes $100 MRR; monthly plans count at face. It excludes one-offs, setup fees and usage overages unless you track those separately as a stream. Movements in MRR decompose cleanly: new adds, expansion from upgrades, contraction from downgrades, and churned revenue lost, and that decomposition is where the diagnosis lives.
Why it matters to an indie builder: MRR is the number the entire ecosystem prices against, valuation multiples, your own runway math, the morale line on the wall. Its power is comparability: unlike revenue, which lumps a $10,000 project and 500 subscriptions into one blur, MRR tracks exactly the part that renews without re-selling, and its monthly cadence makes growth or decay visible within weeks.
A concrete example: a tool at $8,900 MRR adds 30 new customers at $29 (+$870), loses 11 to churn (-$319), and sees 14 upgrades add seats (+$410). Next month reads $9,861: net growth 10.8 percent. Split open, the story is healthier than the headline, expansion covered churn twice over, but 11 losses is the quarter's worst churn count, and the reasons cluster in the logs: annual-plan renewals landing the same month. The single number hid both facts; the decomposition drives two different actions.
Common mistakes: counting trial users or annual cash received as MRR (normalize everything to monthly recurring or the trend lies), celebrating MRR that grows while churn outruns expansion, leaky-bucket growth stops the moment acquisition pauses, mixing in non-recurring revenue because the dashboard looks better, and reading MRR without the movement split, which turns the most diagnostic metric in SaaS into a scoreboard. Pair with arr, churn and ltv; the billing blocks on IndieBoot, Stripe to the merchant-of-record tier, all report it.
How is MRR calculated?
MRR = Number of Customers * Average Revenue Per Customer
