Local-First Software meaning

Software architecture where the primary copy of data lives on the user's device, with sync to servers happening in the background.

What is Local-First Software?

Local-first inverts the default cloud architecture: the app reads and writes against a database on the device, and synchronization with a server happens behind the scenes. The interface stops waiting on networks entirely, because nearly every operation is a local call. The server becomes a sync and collaboration layer instead of the source of truth the user stares at spinners for.

Why it matters to an indie builder: the user experience bar keeps rising, and instant is the most defensible flavor. Offline capability, zero-latency interactions and data the user can export are features that used to demand a platform team; sync engines and CRDTs turned them into a library choice. For privacy-positioned products, data on device is also a selling proposition you can state in one sentence.

A concrete example: a note-taking app rebuilt local-first. Old version: every keystroke debounces a network call; on a subway, edits queue visibly or fail. New version: writes land in SQLite in about a millisecond, the screen never blocks, and a background engine reconciles with the server and other devices when connectivity returns, with a CRDT deciding conflicts. Users describe the app as fast, but the real change is structural: there is no spinner to see.

Common mistakes: assuming the server can disappear (it still owns identity, permissions and backups: local-first is not serverless), trusting client writes (re-validate every mutation server-side; the device is in hostile hands), underestimating deletion and conflict semantics, which are where local-first projects actually sink or swim, and bolting sync onto a cloud-native codebase late instead of choosing the pattern with the data model. The local-first blocks on IndieBoot, from sync engines to CRDT libraries, map the current field.
