HCI meaning
Human-computer interaction: the study and craft of how people use machines, interfaces, input methods and feedback loops.
What is HCI?
HCI is the discipline behind every interface that feels obvious. It studies the loop between human and machine, what the person perceives, what they intend, what the system affords and feeds back, and it draws on psychology, ergonomics and design to explain why some interfaces disappear into use while others fight it. Direct manipulation, progressive disclosure, Fitts's law and feedback latency are all HCI furniture, present in every app you have ever called intuitive.
Why it matters to an indie builder: HCI knowledge is quality multiplication at zero marginal cost. You will never out-feature a funded competitor, but you can out-clarity them, and the research literature is a century of cheap lessons about attention, memory limits, error recovery and motor precision, waiting to be applied. Every support ticket that reads I could not find, I did not notice, I was afraid to click is an HCI failure with a known remedy.
A concrete example: a settings screen ships with two destructive buttons, Delete workspace and Save changes, side by side, same color, same size. Support receives accidental-deletion tickets within the month, twelve of them. The HCI fix costs an hour: destructive action visually separated, red and smaller, a typed-confirmation for the irreversible one, and an undo window on the other. Accidental deletions drop to zero, the tickets stop, and the hour spent outperforms any feature hour that quarter. The principles, perceptual distinction, action reversibility, confirmation proportional to stakes, predate the app by decades.
Common mistakes: treatingHCI as styling (the field is about cognition and motor behavior, color palettes ride on top), designing for the expert user, who is you, instead of the first-session user, who is the customer, ignoring latency as an interface property, a 40ms and a 400ms button press are different products to the nervous system, and shipping interfaces without recovery paths, undo beats confirmation dialogs in nearly every measured comparison, because confirmations train reflexive yes-clicking. The ux and ui entries are the applied siblings of this one; the ux trait blocks on IndieBoot mark products built on these foundations.
