CTA meaning
Call to action: the specific instruction that tells the visitor what to do next, typically a button or link with one clear verb.
What is CTA?
A call to action is the moment a page stops describing and starts asking. Sign up free, Start free trial, Book a demo, Get the template: one instruction, one primary button, placed where the reader's decision happens. Every page has one job, and the CTA is the sentence that states it.
Why it matters to an indie builder: CTAs carry more weight per word than anything else on the page, because they convert attention you already earned. The traffic cost nothing extra; the button decides how much of it survives to become a user. Small teams over-invest in new features and under-invest in the sentence that monetizes the ones they shipped, which is backwards when a CTA rewrite takes ten minutes.
A concrete example: a landing page tested with three CTA variants over two weeks. Learn more converts at 1.8 percent: it asks nothing. Sign up converts 3.1 percent: clear but costly-sounding. Start free, no card needed converts 4.6 percent: the verb is specific and the objection is answered inside the button. Same page, same traffic, 2.5 times the signups from eight words. That is the compounding arithmetic of getting the ask right.
Common mistakes: multiple competing CTAs of equal weight, which reads as no decision and converts like none, vague verbs, Submit, Continue, Learn more, that postpone the choice, burying the button below the fold or inside a paragraph where skimmers never land, and never testing, the copy, the placement, the color in that order, because a CTA nobody revisits is a CTA quietly leaking half its conversions. Wire the button to an analytics event, a PostHog or Plausible action, so the next argument about it is settled with a number.
