Write Once, Run Anywhere
A general-purpose programming language and computing platform. It is the backbone for building enterprise applications, Android apps, and more.
Java is the enterprise workhorse language: statically typed, JVM-compiled, with three decades of libraries, an enormous hiring pool, and a modernization arc, records, pattern matching, virtual threads, that keeps it relevant for new work rather than legacy alone.
Why it matters to an indie builder: the JVM is a serious runtime, throughput and observability that few platforms match, and the ecosystem, Spring, Kafka, Elasticsearch, Gradle, is the substrate most serious infrastructure runs on. Integration work, connectors and enterprise APIs, keeps landing in Java because that is what the other side speaks.
A realistic use: a high-throughput backend with Spring Boot, virtual threads for IO-heavy endpoints, Flyway migrations on Postgres, and the JVM profiler culture for keeping p99s honest. Build once, run anywhere still pays off across clouds and ARM servers.
Trade-offs: ceremony and startup time are real, though improving each release, and the language moves conservatively by design. Compare with Go for lightweight concurrency and deployment, Kotlin for the modern JVM syntax, and Node for product teams optimizing iteration speed.
Who it's for
Enterprises and Android developers building on the most widely deployed managed-runtime language.
