The industry-standard GraphQL client

The GraphQL platform: client cache, server and studio in one. Ship one schema to web, mobile and a public API.

Apollo is the GraphQL platform that turned a query language into a product: a client that caches and normalizes data on the frontend, a server that implements the schema and resolvers, and a studio that inspects the graph in production. It is the default choice when a team decides GraphQL is worth its complexity.

Why it matters to an indie builder: GraphQL pays off when many clients consume the same data with different shapes, a web app, a mobile app and a public API. Instead of endpoint sprawl and over-fetching, clients ask for exactly the fields they render, and the schema becomes the contract. Apollo's client cache is the operational win: a mutated object updates everywhere it appears, which removes a class of state-sync bugs.

A realistic use: a dashboard with several panels reading overlapping entities. One query fetches the user, their projects and counts; navigating between panels serves from normalized cache while revalidating in the background, so screens feel instant without hand-written caching logic.

Trade-offs: GraphQL is a real cost. Schema design, resolver performance, N+1 queries and persisted-query security all need attention, and for a single client with simple reads, REST plus a typed client is faster to ship. Adopt it when client diversity or API products justify it. Compare with server libraries that generate GraphQL from your existing models if you want less boilerplate.
